Advisory Board

Gaye Rowley’s research focuses on the history of women and women’s writing in Japan from the late sixteenth through the early twentieth century. Her publications include Yosano Akiko and The Tale of Genji (2000, rev. open access ed. 2022); a translation of Masuda Sayo’s memoir Geisha (1957) entitled Autobiography of a Geisha (2003); The Female as Subject: Reading and Writing in Early Modern Japan (edited with Peter Kornicki and Mara Patessio, 2010); An Imperial Concubine’s Tale: Scandal, Shipwreck, and Salvation in Seventeenth Century Japan (2013); and a translation of Ōgimachi Machiko’s Matsukage nikki (ca. 1710-12) entitled In the Shelter of the Pine: A Memoir of Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu and Tokugawa Japan (2021), which won the 2022-2023 Lindsley and Masao Miyoshi Translation Prize awarded by the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture.
She serves on the International Advisory Board of Japan Review and is an Editorial Advisor for Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal
