James B. Lewis is Professor of Korean History at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom. He is an expert in Korean-Japanese relations and the economic history of Korea. His publications include The East Asian War, 1592–1598 (editor, Routledge, 2015); coauthor of “Toward an Anthropometric History of Chosŏn Dynasty Korea, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Century,” The Journal of the Historical Society (2013); coauthor of “The Biological Standard of Living in Pre-Modern Korea: Determinants of Height of Militia Recruits During the Chosŏn Dynasty,” Economics and Human Biology (2017); coauthor of “Korean Expansion and Decline from the Seventeenth to the Nineteenth Century,” The Journal of Economic History (2008); coauthor of “Korean Double-Entry Merchant Accounts from Kaesŏng City (1786–1892),” Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies (2013); and cotranslator of Korea’s Premier Collection of Classical Literature: Selections from Sŏ Kŏjŏng’s (1420–1488) Tongmunsŏn (University of Hawai’i Press, 2019).

He is a past President of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe and a past President of the British Association for Korean Studies.
